German Police seizes bitcoins worth Rs 18k crore

German Police on Tuesday seized 50,000 bitcoins -- worth Rs 18,000 crore – allegedly bought with wealth earned through sale of copyright material.


According to German broadcaster Deutsche Welles, the seizure was made by the country's eastern state of Saxony, when two people "voluntarily transferred" the bitcoins into the authority's wallet.   


Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) called it probably the biggest seizure of its kind in Germany.


BKA in a statement said they were investigating two men, aged 40 and 37, who are suspected of running a piracy website till 2013 and amassing the sum selling copyrighted works and later buying with them cryptocurrency to for money-laundering.
