The Union Cabinet has approved an 'India AI Mission' with an allocation of Rs 10,371.92 crore over a period of five years, aimed at propelling artificial intelligence development in the country.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal made the announcement during a cabinet briefing on Thursday.
In a press release, the government said, "The IndiaAI mission will establish a comprehensive ecosystem catalyzing AI innovation through strategic programs and partnerships across the public and private sectors."
It added, "By democratizing computing access, improving data quality, developing indigenous AI capabilities, attracting top AI talent, enabling industry collaboration, providing startup risk capital, ensuring socially impactful AI projects and bolstering ethical AI, it will drive responsible, inclusive growth of India's AI ecosystem."
Scheduled for implementation by the 'IndiaAI' Independent Business Division under the Digital India Corporation, the mission comprises eight key components, including IndiaAI Compute Capacity, IndiaAI Innovation Centre, and a dataset platform.
According to the government, the IndiaAI compute capacity will develop a scalable AI computing system with over 10,000 GPUs through public-private partnership. An AI marketplace will offer services and pre-trained models to support AI innovation.
The IndiaAI Innovation Centre will focus on creating and implementing indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and domain-specific foundational models in vital sectors.
"The IndiaAI Datasets Platform will streamline access to quality non-personal datasets for AI Innovation. A unified data platform will be developed to provide a one-stop solution for seamless access to non-personal datasets to Indian Startups and Researchers," the Union government said.
According to it, the IndiaAI Application Development Initiative will aim at boosting AI applications in important sectors like central ministries, state departments, and other institutions. It will concentrate on creating and expanding AI solutions that can drive significant socio-economic changes on a large scale.
"IndiaAI FutureSkills is conceptualized to mitigate barriers to entry into AI programs and will increase AI courses in undergraduate, masters-level, and Ph.D. programs. Further, Data and AI Labs will be set-up in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India to impart foundational level courses," the release said.
The IndiaAI Startup Financing pillar is designed to aid and speed up deep-tech AI startups, ensuring they have smooth access to funding for futuristic AI projects.
The Safe & Trusted AI pillar will ensure responsible development, deployment, and adoption of AI.
