Counter-terror body says X's seat on board worrying over Hamas videos

An online counter-terrorism organisation has expressed concern over X being part of its board in light of content related to Palestinian militant group Hamas being easily accessible on the social media site.

The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT), according to Sunday Times, said its credibility is undermined by X's membership and position on its board.

The GIFCT also includes major social media groups Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and Alphabet's YouTube, with X being a founder member of the group.

The Sunday Times, according to a report in Reuters, said that X, formally known as Twitter, is at present the easiest social media platform to find Hamas videos, and cited in support of the claim a report by the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that combats extremism and antisemitism.

It said CST researchers were able to find on X propaganda videos from terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad within 10 minutes of search.

According to Sunday Times, the body said it had become "increasingly concerned by significant reductions in online trust and safety capabilities for certain platforms, and a perceived decrease in the priority of the issue, negatively impacting companies' ability to moderate extremist content online."

Since Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, which was then rebranded as X, the social media site has eased rules for verified accounts, allowing very much anyone to have it, as long as they pay for it.

The GIFCT was created in 2017 under pressure from US

and European governments.
