Mumbai, Apr 15: Consumer VOICE, in collaboration with Vaishvik Vikas Sanstha, hosted a roundtable discussion at 20 Down Town, Eros building, Churchgate today focused on promoting responsible alcohol consumption in Maharashtra.
The consultation convened key stakeholders, including senior government officials, public health experts, academic representatives, and civil society organisations.
Discussions primarily addressed the concerning increase in per capita alcohol consumption across Maharashtra, emphasising the patterns of excessive and binge drinking prevalent among youth. Participants analysed several socioeconomic factors influencing this trend, such as rising disposable incomes, changing lifestyles, evolving social norms, and increased social acceptability of alcohol.
A critical issue highlighted during the consultation was the widespread lack of public awareness regarding the alcohol content in beverages and the absence of clear guidelines on safe drinking practices. Experts underscored the urgent need for sustained public education campaigns and effective policy interventions aimed at encouraging moderate drinking and educating consumers.
Dr. Vaibhav on behalf Dr. Daksha Shah – Executive Health Officer, Public Health Department, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation suggested to involve ground level health workers (like Asha workers, Anganwadi workers etc.) for sensitising and messaging, emphasising the importance of collaborative action: "Addressing alcohol misuse requires coordinated efforts involving multiple stakeholders, including government departments, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and community-based organisations. Our collective aim must be to safeguard public health and enhance awareness around responsible consumption."
This roundtable signifies an essential move towards formulating cohesive strategies that prioritise public health and promote safe alcohol consumption behaviour across Maharashtra.
