Facebook parent Meta is now testing the integration of Meta AI into the Instagram search bar, having already begun a trial for the same service in WhatsApp in India.
The Meta AI option appears in the search bar of Instagram and takes you to a chat with Meta AI in your direct messages. There, you can ask questions or choose from some suggested options.
It could also help you find new stuff on Instagram. For example, a video on Threads showed that you can tap on a suggestion like "Beautiful Maui sunset Reels" to look for Reels about that.
However, the AI shied away from an open response when Voltaire asked it some political questions and suggested visiting the Election Commission of India website.
When asked whether elections are free in India, the Meta AI responded with a canned answer: "This question may pertain to a political figure during general elections, please refer to the link https://elections24.eci.gov.in."
Some users were able to ask Meta AI for Reels ideas. This shows that Meta wants to use the power of generative AI not just for writing, but also for finding fresh content on platforms like Instagram.
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, posted on X to point out that the interface uses a design similar to the start-up’s search screen.
A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch, "Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity."
There's plenty of talk about the quality of Instagram search which Meta might aim to enhance using generative AI.
