Mira Murati launches own AI startup: Thinking Machines Lab

OpenAI ex-CTO Mira Murati has launched her own AI startup Thinking Machines Lab, with an eye to the "future where everyone has access to the knowledge."

Murati has kept a low profile ever since she departed from OpenAI last September amid an upheaval which saw the exit also of the firm's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.

With her latest venture, Murati, according to a post on X, seeks to adapt AI systems to work for people's specific needs and foster a culture of open science.

In a press release, the company said even though AI systems have progressed dramatically, a general understanding of how they work has remained restricted to the top research labs and failed to devolve to the public discourse.

It said it aims to make these AI systems "more widely understood, customizable and generally capable."

The firm boasts of a crack team with tech pioneers from OpenAI, Mistral, Google DeepMind and other AI firms.

"Scientific progress is a collective effort. We believe that we'll most effectively advance humanity's understanding of AI by collaborating with the wider community of researchers and builders," Thinking Machines Lab said.

"We see enormous potential for AI to help in every field of work. While current systems excel at programming and mathematics, we're building AI that can adapt to the full spectrum of human expertise and enable a broader spectrum of applications," it added.

Murati left OpenAI months after a coup-style deposing of company's CEO Sam Altman in a hurly burly which settled within days with his return at the helm.

She has often made predictions that AI will render certain types of jobs obsolete.

In an interview last June at Dartmouth Engineering, Murati said AI will replace some of the creative jobs, and the reason will be that they are dispensable anyway.

Thinking Machines recently recruited OpenAI co-founder John Schulman as head of research, with Barrett Zoph, another former OpenAI leader, as the startup's CTO.
