Nepal's government on Thursday announced that it is blocking most social media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, after the companies failed to comply with rules requiring them to officially register in the country.

Minister for Communication and Information Prithvi Subba Gurung said nearly two dozen social networks widely used in Nepal were repeatedly asked to register but ignored the notices, according to Associated Press.

The platforms would be blocked immediately, Gurung said.

TikTok, Viber and three other social media companies will continue to operate because they have completed registration with the authorities, Gurung added.

The government has introduced a bill in parliament that seeks to regulate social media companies by requiring them to open liaison offices in Nepal and take responsibility for content.

The legislation, however, has been criticised by rights groups as a tool for censorship, aimed at silencing dissent and restricting freedom of expression.

Officials have defended the move, saying new laws are needed to ensure both users and operators are accountable for what is published online.

In India, similar requirements exist.

The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) mandates that large social media firms must establish a physical office and appoint compliance officers in the country.
