OpenAI has said it is working on SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine with real-time access to information across the internet.
Â
The company in a blog post said it was testing the model's prototype with a small group of users and publishers to get feedback.
Â
"Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results," the company said. "We believe that by enhancing the conversational capabilities of our models with real-time information from the web, finding what you’re looking for can be faster and easier."
Â
Google, and Microsoft with its Bing, have also built similar AI tech that generates text as a way of answering questions and summarising online information.
Â
OpenAI said it is working with online publishers, such as Reuters, on the product.
"We are committed to a thriving ecosystem of publishers and creators, adding that the technology would highlight high-quality content in a conversational interface with multiple opportunities for users to engage," it said.
Â
The top executive of Atlantic magazine hailed the effort as the next frontier of how we search for stuff on the internet. Â
"AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it's crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers," Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, which has partnered with OpenAI, said.
"We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process, and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic," he added.
