US President Donald Trump on Friday warned that Apple Inc. would face a steep 25 per cent tariff if iPhones sold in the US are not manufactured domestically.

The declaration sent Apple shares down 2.5 per cent in premarket trading and rattled US stock futures, Reuters reported.

"I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhones... will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else," Trump posted Friday, adding, "If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S."

The statement echoed earlier warnings reported by Voltaireweb, where Trump privately pressured Apple CEO Tim Cook to halt manufacturing expansion in India and commit to US-based production.

Apple, which has been ramping up its India manufacturing footprint amid ongoing US-China trade tensions, said most iPhones sold in the US this quarter would be made in India.

It remains unclear whether Trump has the authority to impose tariffs on a single company, but the political messaging is clear: bring jobs home, or pay the price.
